According to a report by Sbt News on August 19, the Brazilian Senate’s Economic Affairs Committee (CAE) is expected to vote on a bill regulating electronic cigarettes (PL 5.008/2023) this Tuesday, August 20. The meeting is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. that day.
Earlier this year, senators attempted several times to vote on the bill, but progress was hindered due to disagreements among the lawmakers.
The bill, introduced by Senator Soraya Thronicke, was initially set for discussion on July 9. However, at the request of Senator Mecias de Jesus, the agenda was postponed to August 20 to allow for more discussion.
On the 13th, the Senate held a special session to debate the issue. Supporters of the regulation argue that it could generate BRL 2.2 billion (USD 406 million) in tax revenue annually. However, opponents are concerned that the product may impose additional financial strain on the National Health System (SUS).
The bill’s rapporteur, Senator Eduardo Gomes, has expressed his support for the proposal and has suggested some amendments.
As of now, no formal vote has been conducted.
