According to Cspdaily News on June 4, the New York State Senate passed a bill that would ban the sale of e-cigarette products that resemble school supplies or children’s toys, as well as e-cigarette products with packaging and advertising targeting children.
Senate Bill S7882, introduced by State Senator Monica Martinez, proposes that violators face fines of up to $1,500 for a first offense and up to $2,500 for each subsequent offense if the bill is enacted.
Under this bill, businesses selling tobacco and related products would be prohibited from offering items that might include images, logos, symbols, slogans, sales messages, or colors attractive to minors. This includes representations of cartoon, movie, or video game characters, toys, electronics, and school supplies such as markers, highlighters, pens, and USB drives.
This bipartisan legislation, co-sponsored by nine state senators, still needs approval from the legislative committee and the governor’s signature to become law. A companion version of the proposal, introduced by Assemblymember Charles Fall, is also on the committee’s agenda.
