Total Electronic Cigarette Exports Reach $11.08 Billion in 2023

With the release of December’s electronic cigarette export data by Chinese customs, OSKVAPE compiled data from January to December 2023, revealing a significant growth in China’s electronic cigarette export scale. The total export value reached $11.08 billion, a year-on-year increase of 12.48%. 

1, December export Data

1, China exported electronic cigarettes worth approximately $77.27 million to Russia, showing a MoM growth of 11.61%.

2, Simultaneously, electronic cigarette exports to the United States from China reached $327 million, reflecting a MoM growth of 22.31%.

3, The most substantial increase was observed in exports to the United Kingdom, totaling around $149 million, with a MoM growth of 56.31%.

4, However, electronic cigarette exports to South Korea from China decreased by 18.3% MoM.

2, Total Export Volume: 233,000 tons, a YoY growth of 43.37%

In 2023, China’s total electronic cigarette export volume reached 233,000 tons, a remarkable increase compared to 162,800 tons in 2022, representing a growth rate of 43.37%. include tobacco flavored disposable vape, empty disposable vape pen, vape cartridge, vape pens, etc. The largest proportion is still the nicotine disposable vape.

3, Average Export Unit Price Decline: 21.55%

Notably, despite the strong growth in total export value and volume, the average export unit price of Chinese electronic cigarettes decreased by 21.55% in 2023, dropping from $60.54 per kilogram in 2022 to $47.50 per kilogram. This may reflect the sensitivity of the international market to the prices of electronic cigarette products and the pricing competition strategies adopted by manufacturers to gain market share.

4, Coverage of 167 Countries and Territories, 10 New Destinations Added

In 2023, China’s electronic cigarette market coverage expanded further, exporting to 167 countries and territories globally, an increase of 10 compared to 2022.

The new destinations include Afghanistan, Benin, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, French Saint Martin, Fiji, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cuba, Guam, Dutch Saint Martin, Canary Islands, Gabon, Malawi, Marshall Islands, Mauritania, American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, South Sudan, Nicaragua, Samoa, Turkmenistan, Wallis and Futuna, Uganda, and Taiwan, China, totaling 24 countries and territories.

5, 14 Countries and Territories Removed as Export Destinations

However, in 2023, electronic cigarette exports were discontinued to 14 countries and territories, including Botswana, Republic of the Congo, Kiribati, Guinea-Bissau, Cook Islands, Liberia, Martinique, Mauritius, Monaco, Niger, Palau, Seychelles, Saint Lucia, and Brunei.

Additionally, according to the Kazakhstan media outlet Tengrinews on January 24th, the Kazakhstani House of Representatives passed a bill completely banning the import, production, and sale of electronic cigarettes in the country.

The law introduces criminal liability for the circulation of electronic cigarettes:

1, The maximum penalty for selling electronic cigarettes is detention for up to 50 days.

2, Importing and disseminating electronic cigarettes carries a maximum prison sentence of 2 years.

3, For criminal organizations or similar activities on a particularly large scale or repeated violations, the maximum sentence can be 5 years of imprisonment.
